THERE WAS ONCE A PRICKLY PEAR that wanted to learn a new foreign language. “I would like to learn a language that is to my tastes”, the Prickly Pear said and asked the other fruit and vegetables in the garden for advice. To be on the safe side, he also wanted them to justify their suggestion with a popular saying in that language.
“Better late than never”, an olive that came from Italy told him. She then explained that Italian is such a beautiful language that sooner or later he would want to learn it.
“Big words are blown away by the wind, as we say in our country”, a plum from Spain told him. Then he explained that as Spanish is a language that is very easy to learn and that is spoken by millions of people all over the world, it would make a much better choice.
“From Spain, neither good wind nor good marriage will come”, told him an orange that came from Portugal. He suggested Portuguese as a foreign language, as it is very similar to Spanish and should he choose Portuguese, he would be able to comprehend both languages in the end.
“Impossible n'est pas français, as we say in our country”, told him a quince that came from France. Then he explained that French was more difficult to learn than Italian, Spanish and even Portuguese, but should he choose to learn French then he could easily learn any of these languages, as they had many similar words.
So our good Prickly Pear chose French.
